It seems that every day we learn of new efforts by the federal government to curtail citizens’ constitutional rights, whether it be freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, property rights, or even the right to not purchase health insurance.
When members of Congress take their oath of office, they pledge to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. A major responsibility of Congressmen is to determine constitutionality before legislation is passed. Unfortunately, many of our elected officials don’t care whether the laws they pass are constitutional, and that became very evident during the entire Health Care Reform debate. One Congressman, when asked whether the individual health insurance mandate was constitutional declared that he didn’t care about the Constitution.
Ray supports a Heritage Foundation proposal requiring all legislation to identify and explain its constitutional authority. America is a unique nation because of its constitution and tradition of liberty and self government. They should be embraced by our elected officials, not tossed aside when they become inconvenient.
